Godot 4.7 has now entered beta, bringing HDR support, a new Asset Store, rendering improvements, and additional tools for level creation and shader development.
A few weeks back, we covered the first four development snapshots of Godot 4.7. Since then, the engine has entered beta, giving developers a better look at what is coming in Godot 4.7.
HDR Support
One of the largest additions in Godot 4.7 is HDR output support.

HDR allows compatible displays to show a wider range of brightness and color information. This can help scenes display brighter highlights while preserving more detail in darker areas.

While the technology has been introduced over multiple updates, it stands as one of the most significant rendering additions planned for this incoming new version.
Asset Store
Godot 4.7 will also introduce the new Godot Asset Store.

The store replaces the long-running Asset Library and brings a few features that were not previously available, such as: user reviews, ratings, version selection, changelogs, and analytics for publishers.

The new system is connected to Godot's shared account infrastructure and will be integrated into Godot 4.7.

According to the Godot Foundation, the existing Asset Library will remain available for older engine versions, though it is expected to become a read-only repository in the future.
Scene Paint Tool
For 2D projects, Godot 4.7 introduces a new Scene Paint tool.

The tool lets developers paint scenes into a level. This can make it easier to build larger environments and fill them with props, vegetation, and other objects.

Each painted scene keeps working normally after being added to the map.
Rectangular Area Lights
Rendering now has support for rectangular area lights.

These lights emit the illumination from a rectangular shape, making them useful for screens, windows, ceiling panels, and other large light sources.

The feature comes from the new AreaLight3D system and works in real time.
Inline Shader Previews
This new feature lets developers preview shader results inside the text editor while writing code. This can make it easier to experiment with different effects and spot mistakes earlier.
These are just some of the additions coming to Godot 4.7. The update also includes many other changes in rendering, editor workflow, platform support, and more.

If you want to learn more about shaders in Godot, The Godot Shaders Bible covers topics like stylized shading, screen-space VFX, lighting, and vertex manipulation through step-by-step examples.

It is a good starting point for developers who want to better understand how shaders work and improve the visuals of their games.
