Adding Chapter 5: "3D Shapes and Rendering", the full version of the book will soon be available, with a limited printed run to follow!
It’s been a long time since we first announced Visualizing Equations Vol. 2: Shaders and Procedural Shapes. The project officially began on October 23, 2023, and after multiple delays, the final digital update is set to be released this month. This update includes Chapter 5: 3D Shapes and Rendering.
The idea behind this project was simple: to explain the mathematical functions behind procedural 2D and 3D shapes and visualize them using custom shaders in Unity 6. However, the book approaches these concepts from a mathematical perspective rather than a shader-focused one.
This distinction is important because some readers initially expected the book to be a shader guide. While shaders are used for visualization, the core focus is on math; how it shapes procedural forms and how understanding these principles can elevate a technical artist’s work.
We started this project to bridge the gap between math and shaders. Many shader artists rely on copying and pasting code they find online. However, when faced with the challenge of creating unique VFX for specific projects, they often struggle due to gaps in their mathematical knowledge. This book aims to change that by providing a deeper understanding of the math behind procedural visuals.
A physical edition of Visualizing Equations Vol. 2 will soon be available, but only 2,000 copies will be printed: 500 in Spanish and 1,500 in English. One of the key improvements in this edition is the enhanced print quality; something we learned from our experience with
The Unity Shaders Bible on Amazon. Moving forward, we’re ensuring that every book meets a higher standard of quality.
