We take a look at a paid Blender Texture Paint add-on with 28 watercolor brushes.
If you’ve ever tried painting stylized or traditional textures directly in Blender, you know how challenging it can be to achieve an authentic watercolor look. Artist
Omar Faruq spent nearly two years developing a solution to this. The brush pack was originally going to be released around two years ago, but the author decided to postpone it to improve it significantly, making it more organic and better performing than its earlier iteration.
CR Watercolor Brushes is a brush pack built for Blender’s Texture Paint mode and is fully integrated with the Asset System in Blender 4.3 or above. It lets artists paint watercolor-style textures directly inside Blender without relying on external software. The pack also includes complete 3D watercolor pieces painted entirely inside Blender to show how the brushes behave in real workflows.
A realtime texturing process video is included to demonstrate the full workflow at your own pace.
The creator describes the pack as containing the essential watercolor effects needed for hand-painted 3D artwork. The set includes:
- Basic watercolor brushes
- Granulation effects
- Drip brushes
- Splatter brushes
- Mixer brushes
- 28 total brushes
- The Artist's Essentials - Texture Paint Brushes: This is a brush pack designed for Blender’s texture paint mode, offering ~50 handcrafted brushes covering traditional art mediums such as charcoal, watercolor and ink, plus stylised/grunge effects.
Differences: While CR Watercolor is very focused on watercolor effects (splatter, drips, granulation), The Artist’s Essentials pack gives you broader medium coverage (charcoal, ink, watercolor) and more general-purpose use. If you want flexibility across styles, this is a strong bonus.
- Traditional watercolor brushes for grease pencil: A pack by Sophie Jantak compatible with Blender 3.4+ / 4.3, designed for the Grease Pencil mode but still relevant for painterly 3D workflows. Includes 108 brushes scanned from real watercolor textures.
Differences: This one is targeted more at Grease Pencil (2D/3D hybrid) rather than full texture paint across 3D meshes. If your work uses Grease Pencil or stylised 2.5D overlays, this is ideal—but for mesh texture-painting the CR pack remains more direct.
