With the release of the first three chapters of Unity 6 Editor Tools Essentials, the author Harrison Ferrone shares some words on his inspiration, and why you should dig deep into the EditorTools API!
When I’m thinking of writing new material I always stick to the same two questions – 1) what book do I wish I had when I started out in software development, and 2) how do I wish it had been taught.

I’ve written the introductory book I always wanted (Learning C# by Developing Games with Unity), I’ve tackled the intermediary book I desperately needed to level up as a software engineer (Learning C# Design Patterns with Unity), and now I’ve come to my (dare I say it) favourite topic – Unity Editor Scripting.
I’m passionate about guiding programmers at all levels through complex technical topics, breaking them down into clear, practical lessons, and helping them avoid the struggles that so many of us face starting out. No one should be left without a mentoring hand no matter the topic difficulty. I’m so excited to share this new book with you, which is full of hands-on exercises for extending Unity’s editor, creating custom tools, and streamlining complex workflows using accessible examples from beloved RPG games.

No matter what field or topic area I’ve worked in, including iOS development, agile project management, or technical writing, I always gravitate back to making my process work for me, which is why Editor scripting in Unity is such a powerful tool I’m really taking my time to ensure this book is practical, engaging, and full of real insights, not just dry documentation.

If you’re a Unity developer looking to master Editor scripting, you’re in the right place!
