Diego Maraza shares the textures and particle settings behind his Unity fire tornado, including the turbulence that makes it sway.
Diego Maraza built this fire tornado using Unity’s
Particle System, designing the effect for use in a
2D game. Its shape comes from horizontal ring particles that rise, expand and rotate.
Each ring combines a ring texture with a noise texture. Diego assigns random starting colors between orange and red, then adjusts color, size and rotation over the particles’ lifetimes.
As the rings travel upward along Y, they grow wider, forming the tornado’s narrow base and broader top. Diego also adds a slight leftward rotation, giving the rising stack a helical appearance.
To give the tornado its swaying motion, he adds turbulence through the Noise module. In the settings he shared, noise affects X and Z, with Y set to zero, so the rings shift sideways as they rise.
